WIP Wednesday: Low Volume Baby Quilt

Today I'm auditioning binding for this low volume baby quilt top I made on the weekend. 

I'm trying to use up as much of my scraps and stash as possible at the moment. I really need to stop buying new fabric and start using what I have. So far, it hasn't been a challenge!

Would you believe me if I told you that I worked on the scrappy improv block quilt today? I decided this morning that those blocks have been languishing in the WIP basket for far too long so I pulled them out and turned them into a quilt top.

I'm so glad I did.

Just the two side borders to go and it's finished.

Some Saturday Sewing

Master 2 (almost 3) was out and about today so I had some time alone. Of course, I spent it sewing. Something I haven't done all week.

I got this shabby chic baby quilt top finished.

Polaroid 9 patch block for Fiona at Finding Fifth. She is in the QCA Bee # 1 group and this is her block for February. She is going to use these blocks to make a quilt to donate to a child who has lost everything in the recent bushfires here in Australia. I'm not in her Bee group but as I want to do more charity sewing this year, and I have lots of polaroid blocks from the Say Cheese! Polaroid Block Swap, I decided to make her a block. Last night I was looking at all things Nightshade online, looking for some quilt inspiration for these fabric remnants I was given (that's right....given) by my local quilt shop. So after I packed up and was waiting for Master 2 to return I had a bit of fabric play.

I also have some of the other prints to put with this. At this stage I'm thinking of doing random improv blocks of different sizes and then just filling the spaces between with a tone on tone black print. What would you do with it?

Red & Aqua String Block Top

Last night I finally put together all the blocks for my Quilt Club Australia Block Bee 2 quilt. My red and aqua string blocks.

The top measures 45" x 60". I had originally planned for it to be 60" x 60" but I just couldn't bare to make any more blocks. I was over it. It's still going to be a nice lap quilt and it's more about showcasing the blocks that my friends in the Bee have made than making a specific size quilt. 

I have chosen Perfectly Perched Nesting Chairs In Celebration for the back, which I need to order, but I can't decide on a binding. Later in the week I will take it into my local quilt shop and audition a few fabrics.  

What do you think would be good for the binding?

Truck Stop Quilt (Work In Progress)

I finished the top for a custom order last week. It's a king single bed size quilt for a little boy. His mum chose this fantastic out of print fabric, Truck Stop by Alexander Henry Fabrics, and the co-ordinating blue dot fabric. We have matched this with blues and greens to suit his bedroom. She also wanted a large navy border so I went with Navy Kona (which looks a lot lighter in this photo than it actually is). 

I'm thinking navy and white stripe binding and a pieced back with the leftover fabrics. Just waiting on confirmation. Now to work out how to quilt it....

Wednesday's WIP - Plumb Quilt Top

My favourite quilt book is Scrap Republic by Emily Cier. Hardly surprising seeing as though I just love scrappy quilts.

A little while ago I had cut up all my requirements to make the Plumb Quilt from this wonderful book. A few nights ago I just needed a break from my ongoing projects and wanted to make and finish something. As Gemma from Pretty Bobbins puts it, I needed some instant gratification :) 

This is my version of the Plumb quilt.

It's the same pattern as in the book but I didn't stick to the dimensions which means that mine has turned out bigger.

Some Progress

Well after a few weeks absence from any real sewing and my blog, I managed to make some progress today.

I started sewing up the top for the Ballerinas & Bugs quilt. Blocks into strips and then started on sewing strips together. Only a few more to go, hopefully I can do this tomorrow. This is quite likely as Master 2 has come down with a nasty cold so we will be spending the day at home.

Although I haven't done any sewing in the past week, I did get the chance to clean up my sewing table. I am the kind of person who needs a neat and organised work space so I think the state of my area has been a contributing factor in my lack of motivation to sew. Now that it's nice and clean and organised I can't wait to get stuck into my basket of WIP's!

Domesticated Diva Day

Sometimes you can do a lot in one day, but not feel like you have achieved anything. Today was one of those days.

Last night I finished the Amy Butler quilt top that I started this week....

 

This morning I finished this little quilt top for a special new project that I'm working on....stay tuned....

Master 2 has Playgroup tomorrow and for this week's activity they are painting eggs for Easter. We have to take two hollow eggs along and last week we were given the instructions on how to blow an egg. I had never done this before and it was quite an experience I must say. If you have never done it before, this is how it works....

1. Make sure eggs are at room temperature.
2. Take a sewing needle (I used a pin) and make two holes, one at either end of the egg. Make the one on the bottom slightly larger (a little bit smaller than a match head).
3. Take a large needle and pierce into the yolk (you will know this has happened as there will be yolk on the needle).
4. Place egg over a bowl with the larger hole down and blow into the top hole. It may take a bit to get going, but once it does, it should run out easily.
5. Rinse the egg out in a warm solution of water and vinegar and leave to dry.
6. Make an omelette with the egg! (or in my case, Banana and choc chip muffins!)

I haven't baked for awhile and I had a couple of over-ripe bananas so I used the eggs to make banana and choc chip muffins!

I even managed to make up another Blogger's Bundle (any excuse to look at fabric really).

Earlier this week I announced on my Facebook page that I will be closing my shop in the Old Geraldton Gaol on Saturday. I feel a bit sad about it but at the same time I'm looking forward to it because it will mean that I get more time to spend with Master 2 at home and more time for sewing. I will still be selling from my Facebook page and selected local markets, and will eventually open an Etsy store. 

I was going to make up some binding tonight but I think I will just go to bed and watch a movie. My Mum and Stepdad have an extensive collection of DVD's and lately I have been borrowing from it every time I'm over there. My latest loan is the Godfather collection.
